MilkshakeFromMars partnered up with STEM sisters in Canada to host a panel discussion on August 22nd, STEMinism: a conversation. ‘STEMinism‘ is a movement promoting female representation and empowerment in STEM. A Phd candidate for Development and Cell biology. Some of Maria’s recent work includes researching ways of using Zebrafish as a model for imaging studies in vascular cell biology. She is also a string advocate in paving the way to a more level playing field in the STEM community.


Nandita Basu

Nandita Basu

An associate professor at the University of Waterloo in the Civil and Environmental Engineering department.  In her research, Nandita focuses on the impact of humans on water and environments. From nutrient pollution in intensively farmed regions to drought in areas of India, Nandita uses tools from environmental science, engineering, and the social sciences to create sustainable water management solutions. Nandita grew up with her family in a 1-room house in a Kolkata slum, studied Civil Engineering in India, and continued on to complete a Ph.D. from Purdue University in the U.S.  Now, she lives in Waterloo with her son and mentors a large and lively group of graduate students.

A professional Engineer and currently leads digital transformation strategy and innovation at Suncor Energy. Gayathri holds an electrical engineering degree from the University of Calgary, and an MBA from Queen’s University, Canada. She brings over 16 years of experience in field-based technical roles, as well as business transformation and project management roles. Gayathri recently launched a storytelling project, Campfire Kinship, to celebrate the stories of resilience and diversity in STEAM related professions. She is a member of the Board of Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association (CIWA), where she is passionate about applying her skills and experience to create a positive impact for the community.
